EPS Community: Welcome to Year 16
By Dr. Terry Macaluso, Head of School
Eastside Prep is celebrating its 16th first day of school on September 12, 2018. We’ll be ensconcing ourselves into the TALI building—which will be classroom ready on September 17, when students return from grade level overnight orientations. (The Grand Opening WILL take place on Saturday, September 8, 11:00am – 3:00pm, and we plan to have students in the new theatre for convocation on the first day of school – but things will be a little bit rough around the edges!).
I’m sure it’s because I’ve been at EPS “since Hector was a pup,” and that may explain my continued interest in comparing statistics from the early days to the current ones. Here are a few numbers that caught my attention:
2003-2004 | 2018 – 2019 | |
Student Enrollment | 16 | 458 |
Employees | 6 | 103 |
Square Feet of Interior Instructional Space | 2,000 | 170,000 |
Operating Budget | $360,000 | $17,200,000 |
Credentials | 2– BA
2 – MA 2 – PhD |
12 – BA
45 – MA 11 – PhD or JD |
Years of Teaching | All were somewhere between 1 and 5 years of experience | 54% – 16 years or more
23% – 11 – 15 years 17% – 6 – 10 years 6% – 1 – 5 years |
Birth Order | Not sure on this statistic | 50% of current employees were first born in their families of origin (This is potentially dangerous!). |
Watching EPS become the community it is – over time, with the help and support of hundreds of people – has been extraordinarily satisfying. But this is just year 16! Looking back through the years…just THINK about where the school might be 16 years from now – when the class of 2035 takes the stage to collect their diplomas…or will those diplomas be sent to the digital receptors located on the cornea? It could happen!!
Welcome to 2018 – 2019!
