By Sarah Peeden, Head of Middle School
It was a pleasure to honor the accomplishments of the Class of 2028 as a community. Parents, guardians, and eighth graders gathered in the TALI Theatre to listen to faculty speeches about students and to celebrate each member of the Class. Below are excerpts from my speech, the speech by Head of School Sam Uzwack, and those from the faculty. The connections between faculty and students are reflected in each message, along with the books selected by faculty and presented to each eighth grader.
Sarah Peeden, Head of Middle School
Good morning, everyone! Thank you so much for joining us to celebrate the Class of 2028.
I recently had the opportunity to trek to Fort Worden with this amazing class of students. It was also a moment in which this class’s best qualities were on display—your curiosity, authenticity, and desire to have fun together. You are incredibly dedicated students, and each day this year you showed how well prepared you were for the next level with the engagement and critical thinking skills you brought to your classes. You brought big questions into Middle School classrooms that showed your creativity and care for the subjects you studied.
I see how much you love being together and lifting one another up through community and humor. As you prepare to take the next step, I hope you keep that spirit. Remember to welcome new people, take care of one another, and laugh together.
Sam Uzwack, Head of School
Let me offer my congratulations on the successful completion of what, for some, is one of the more challenging chapters of life. If you consider the growth you’ve experienced cognitively, social-emotionally, and physically, you should be very proud of what you’ve accomplished.
It has been a joy to watch your culminating year of Middle School. Eighth grade is a year when you put a lot of pieces together, help shape the culture of the school through your leadership efforts, and begin to look ahead to the next chapter of your education. Our “Continuation” ceremony recognizes that you will continue to learn who you are and find your place in the world. That you will continue to build a more and more complex way of thinking, as you add content, skills, new areas of study, and new, diverse perspectives. It means…you’ve only just begun.
Remembering the positive impact of Zoë’s “clever and enthralling” Classcot creations in fifth grade and her clandestine posting of Nimona images in the seventh grade that spread joy, Ms. Mills commented, “The world needs you, Zoë, to continue creating, delighting, and reminding us to be inspired and inspiring.”
“You are a thoughtful and caring person who brings a sense of careful attentiveness and an eagerness for learning. Your enthusiasm for the arts shines through,” noted Mr. Stromberg of Kaitlyn. He added, “It’s also apparent that you take your education seriously. Moreover, you’re constantly helping those around you too.”
Mr. Graybeal commented that Lauren, along with several friends, started the EPS Kindness Club in seventh grade. He noted Lauren’s ability to find joy in any situation and added, “Whatever you do, I know you’ll continue giving it your best since you put your 100% in everything.”
“Reed is an insatiable reader. His thirst for knowledge is as admirable as his ability to be a loyal friend. Reed is a skilled digital filmmaker, a passionate athlete, and a charismatic actor. Reed always stays true to himself, whether in the day-to-day or playing a character in theatre,” said Ms. Frystak.
“I like your original take on history assignments, Luke, like when you did your anthropological field study while at a Seahawks game,” commented Mr. Yezbick. “Nice work mixing business and pleasure.” He continued, “You also bring great seriousness to your presentations…the caliber of the show definitely goes up a notch.”
His “realism, assertiveness, and ability to tell it like it is” are some of the things Dr. Russell appreciates about William. She continued, “You are often the first to class, usually a beacon of contagious positive energy. And you show up for your team members. Your undercover leadership is strong.”
Of Felicia, Ms. Hale noted, “You are a library… you categorize and connect. Pull each throughline like a beautiful golden thread.” Commenting on Felicia’s deep friendships and voracious reading habits, Ms. Hale added, “You read books, thus you read people.”

Likening Makayla to a gift with many small gifts wrapped inside, Ms. Mills commented that the small gifts include her family ties, her quiet confidence, the churning wheels in her mind, and the joy she finds in friends. She noted, “These are just a few of the many gifts I’ve uncovered. I look forward to all that are yet to be revealed!”
Fondly comparing Kevin to a duckling, Mr. Yates stated that while all is peaceful on the surface, it’s apparent how hard he is working all the time. “I’ve seen you do this, Kevin. Noting that Hannah is a chess player, Ms. Hale said, “You are so organized, thought out. Thanking Aryaman for the impact he has had on the EPS community, Ms. Kuffner noted his GoodNewzCoronavirus website. “You helped folks in the EPS community, and folks all over the world, feel a sense of hope and positivity. I have seen this compassionate leadership in your daily life as well.”
