Advisory Program
If our academic programs are the bricks of our school, our Advisory Program is the mortar. Advisors serve as liaisons between home and school, meeting for formal conferences with students and parents twice per year and meeting weekly in advisory groups. Every Eastside Prep student is assigned a grade-level Advisor. Students will have a different advisor for fifth grade and sixth grade, then a two-year rotation in seventh and eighth grade. Upper School advisories are staffed by grade-level teachers. Advisors will meet with their group of roughly twelve students once to twice weekly for thirty minutes. The role of the advisor is one of culture building, support, and advocacy. Advisors get to know their group of students well and track how each of them is doing academically, socially, behaviorally. They help students set goals and work towards them. They are sounding boards and go-to people for questions about how things work at EPS. They are cheerleaders and coaches for students as they move through their EPS experience. Advisors are also an important resource for parents. The parent-advisor relationship undoubtedly evolves as students navigate different developmental stages. Middle School is a time when students should start to take the reins more and embrace self-advocacy, so advisors work to guide students to initiate conversations themselves when they need support. In a time when students are starting to pull away from parents in a normal and developmentally appropriate way, the advisor can also serve as an important third party to help address behavior and patterns when needed. Parents should not hesitate to contact their student’s Advisor with any questions or concerns throughout the school year.
